CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Martin the Warrior
Character Canon: Redwall

History: Here

AU History: Martin, who wouldn’t be called the Warrior for some years, was born in Union to Luke and Sayna, though Sayna died and Luke’s mother Windred became Martin’s maternal figure. Luke was a high-ranking member of the Swords of the Savior, well-known for his skill with his Pokémon and his status as a Normal/Steel Enlightened. Everyone expected Martin to be Enlightened as well, but he never displayed any abilities beyond a love of Pokémon. This didn’t stop Luke from loving and training his son to follow in his footsteps as a member of the Swords. The entire family was very devout and Martin was no different.

One day when Martin was about ten, Luke was sent on a patrol. He was unable to tell Luke or Windred where he was going, just that it was important. He never returned. Martin was thirteen when Luke was officially declared dead.

When Martin was fifteen, he joined the Swords and, like his father before him, quickly gained a reputation in the organization as being one of the best and fiercest fighters despite being a completely ordinary human. He was also known as a kind and generous sort who, if not at home or at the headquarters, could generally be found at temples praying or helping others in whatever way he could. After his grandmother died, he was almost never at home, preferring to work

Unfortunately, his generosity would be the end of him. Now twenty-two and the proud trainer of a new Honedge, Martin was patrolling the city one night when the cries of an injured child brought him down a dark and dangerous alleyway. It was a trap, and some of the worst sorts of people attacked, intent on stripping Martin of his Enhanced sword and any other valuables he had. Although he and his Honedge fought bravely, Martin was badly injured by the attackers and died shortly after a medical team arrived to treat him.

You can imagine his surprise when he woke up at the Forest Shrine two months later with nothing but his sword, his Honedge, and the robes he was buried in. Disoriented and confused, Martin wandered around the area near the shrine for a few weeks (bonding with his Budew by complete accident) until he found a Ranger group who told him the date and were able to help him get back to Union. There, after a medical exam, he discovered he was now Enlightened with a Ghost typing. Although invited to rejoin the Swords, Martin instead asked that his status be changed from "dead" to "retired" as he did not feel comfortable joining the group at this point in time.

Canon Personality: Martin, as a child, was stubborn and headstrong. He bristled under authority, even if he obeyed because it was the sensible thing to do. That doesn’t mean he always controlled his temper; until the death of Laterose of Noonvale, Martin was prone to letting his emotions get the better of him. This tendency got him and his grandmother captured by slavers, saw him punished by these very slavers, and may be the reason he was one of the few mice to experience something like the Bloodwrath. It was impossible to really control Martin when he was younger and if he didn’t want to obey then he wouldn’t. Simple as that.

For all that he was a hardheaded child, Martin was not a show-off. He had been raised that a sword was a tool, not a toy, and that it was best to use his skills on the battlefield and nowhere else. His experiences with Badrang and Rose, as well as Boar the Fighter, taught Martin the value of humility. He would do good and do it well, but he would never brag or seek recognition for his deeds. If others chose to talk about him, that was their business.

After the death of Rose, Martin became a much calmer mouse. Still a fierce warrior with a strong sense of right and wrong, he rarely lost his temper or let his emotions guide his decisions anymore. It wasn’t any easier to get Martin to heed, however, unless you were older, wiser, or stronger than him and he respected you. He still hated to see innocents suffer under tyranny and fear and would do what he could to help them, such as when he went up against Badrang or went to Salamandastron to find Boar the Fighter to help the creatures of Mossflower. He would even help those who should have been his enemies, including a dying sea rat and a gentle wildcat.

As a young mouse, Martin was a traveler. He did not have any desire to settle down after the death of Rose, too traumatized to stay in the northlands he had been born. He was disconnected from the world around him to a degree (which is actually never quite stated, but at the end of Martin the Warrior Martin is very clearly suffering from some level of PSTD and at beginning of Mossflower Martin is unaware that he’s in Thousand Eye territory despite it being implied that said territory goes for some miles and is well-known. On top of that, he mentions having traveled for a while and it’s more or less implied that while the Martin who was enslaved was a teenager, the Martin in Mossflower was grown. I am extrapolating from these situations). It wasn’t until later, after nearly dying for Mossflower and helping the creatures build the famous Redwall Abbey, that Martin settled down and became a mouse of peace.

His dedication to justice and safety never left him, however, leading to his ghost protecting the Abbey long after his death, guiding his chosen warriors to his sword and giving advice to the leaders of the abbey as needed.

AU Deviation: Martin’s life here is largely devoid of the trauma and death that his canon incarnation suffered and as such he is a bit more cheerful even after his death. Growing up in Union, a much stricter and ordered world than his canon’s home, a lot of Martin’s rebelliousness and dislike of authority was trained out of him early on, though he is by no means a blind follower. He still makes decisions based on his personal sense of right and wrong; he just also compares what he wants with what he feels the Savior would want. His growth is also reversed to a degree. While in canon his near death prompted him to settle down, his death here has prompted him to wander the world.

He also isn’t as calm and collected as his canon self. He is still fairly levelheaded, but dying has made him just a little twitchy. Lacking the experience at Marshank, Martin is also still a little more hot-headed then his canon self was at this age.

Canon Abilities: In life, Martin was nothing particularly special. Son of a great warrior, grew into a great warrior, later became a monk of sorts, pretty typical. He was noted to be one of the few if not the only mouse to experience something similar to a Badger Lord’s Bloodwrath, a condition that is can cause the fighter to experience extreme berserker like tendencies, often described as turning their eyes red for the duration.

After he died, things got…weird. He always showed up in dreams whenever Redwall needed him the most, he was said to be reborn in the mouse Matthias at one point, his sword became a holy relic of sorts that was only used by the Abbey Warrior, when there was someone to fill that position, or by Martin’s chosen hero.

So while he really doesn’t have any canon abilities alive, he gets freaky when he dies.

Enlightened Abilities: Martin’s typing will be Ghost/Fairy with the Kindred Soul ability, though the Fairy typing will come after his first evolution.

When Martin first wakes up, he won’t seem to have any sort of Enlightened ability, though he will glow slightly at night and when he is communicating with Pokémon. He also now has very sharp claw-like nails. When he sleeps, however, his consciousness will be able to leave his body though at first he won’t be able to control this or go very far away—maybe forty feet in any direction (including vertical if he’s in a building). If he’s startled, he may suddenly collapse and have a ghost floating outside his body. He is still largely able to communicate while outside his body, but he can’t touch anything, and his voice is very faint unless speaking to a medium or something. He will be able to learn to control when it happens, though it’ll take time.

After he evolves the first time (around what would be level 35 or so) he’ll gain his Fairy typing. With this new typing, Martin will gain an ability similar to Flower Shield in that it will help protect his friends and allies, only it’s not limited to Grass-types and isn’t perfect. The radius of his body leaving ability doubles to eighty feet and he has more control. It’s now much easier to hear his voice when he’s outside his body and he can do typical haunting pranks like rattling pipes.

Appearance-wise, Martin gains streaks in his hair that are kind of Dedenne colored and his hair becomes the texture of a mouse’s fur.

Martin’s final evolution (sometime around level 50ish) focuses more on his Ghost typing. He can now turn completely incorporeal for a few minutes and can willing leave his (sleeping or unconscious) body and go as far away as a hundred and sixty feet. He can now speak just as well outside his body as he can inside it, though he’s still limited to typical haunting pranks if he wants to interact with items and such. He can use a move similar to Moonblast and one similar to Misty Terrain as well. Physically, he now has a prehensile mouse tail and a light dusting of fur-like hair the color of the streaks he got in his last evolution.

I would also like to give him a Fairy-type Enhanced blunted sword, the one thing he managed to wake up with from before, aside from his Honedge.

Starter Pokémon: Boar the Honedge (level 8) and Laterose the Budew (level 5)

Notes/Special Considerations: I asked and was given permission to give Martin a sort of body-leaving ability, where his consciousness wanders around outside of his body at times since his soul technically shouldn’t actually be in his body. I’ve outlined where I want to go with it, ability wise, but please let me know if this isn’t okay and needs modification!

SAMPLES

Note: I have chosen to answer these questions as though he has not died yet. Very little changes personality-wise. It’s just easier to answer questions if you’re not wondering why you’re not dead.

-What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?

Companions, allies, and friends, no matter what their assigned job is in the city. Each Pokémon—and person—is important and worth meeting.

-What do you feel your role in Union is?
-What do you seek for humanity’s future?

…I’m not sure. Stability would be nice, but some might claim we have that already, at least here in Union. [He pauses.] Unity.

-To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?

Any lengths necessary, unless I had every faith that they would return on their own.

-What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you?

You’d have to ask him! [Martin laughs] Well, I feed him, which I imagine helps. But Boar and I get along because we’re very similar. Both of us just want to help—though his idea of helping is sometimes a little less helpful and more of a prank. He seems to like it when we’re volunteering places.

-The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?

However the gods want to judge me. I’ve tried to be a kind and fair person to humans and Pokémon alike, but that doesn’t mean I’ve done enough.

-A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?

I step in and stop the fighting before asking the human what happened. I would then care for the injured Pokémon before bringing the human back to the city with me.

-What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?

Helping others. I’m in a position where I can do that and therefore it’s my job to help as much as I can.

-What do you do to ensure we never again awaken the wrath of the gods upon humanity?

I try to be kind to everyone I meet, at least as long as they aren’t rude or cruel to me first. I do my job. I help others. That’s all I can do, really.

-What strengths make you most qualified for your role within Union?

[He laughs a little, blushing] I wouldn’t say I’m "most qualified" for any role. I just do my job.

-No Enlightened chooses their abilities - and not all are Enlightened. What type abilities would you most desire to manifest and why?

...the ability to understand Pokémon better would be the most useful, I think. I know as a Sword anything that makes me stronger might be more helpful, but strength isn’t very useful if you don’t understand the people and Pokémon you’re working with.
